You're taking the article out of context, then criticizing it.

The context of this article is the time period in which it was written. Currently, there is a lot of conversations surrounding relationships, blame, gender roles, etc.

Leave the article in its current setting and judge it that way.

Whether you like playing the "us vs them" game, which most people probably don't, it is the context of our society at this moment. This will level off eventually, but for right now, the use of femininity and masculinity make perfect sense given that society, currently, looks at many things through that very same lens, rightly or wrongly.
